Card sort
An excellent classification of the topics of a website can be obtained by following the behaviour, wishes and demands of the users. A quick way to discover this from many users is to conduct a card sort research.
Working method
With card sort, users are presented the different items the website will consist of. The users divide these items in certain categories, based on their personal preferences. They will then give names to these categories. A usability expert of 2C proposes a new arrangement or sitemap, based on the arrangement of a large group of users.
The advantage of 2C’s card sort is the possibility of conducting it online. In this way, many users can be asked about their opinion of the arrangement and structure of the website in a relatively short time. This results in a more reliable output.
A card sort can be conducted in two ways:
- A closed card sort: the categories in which the items should be placed are fixed.
- An open card sort: the names of the categories in which the items will be placed can be determined by the users.
2C is happy to advise you about the right method. 2C’s online card sort demo (in dutch) gives you more insight in the way our online card sort works.
When
Do you want to restructure your website? Do you have doubts about the navigation structure and arrangement of information? That is the right time to conduct an online card sort research.
Research time & deliverables
The research time of an online card sort takes about a week, from the moment the card sort is online until the delivery of the report.
The results of the card sort will be analysed by a usability expert. The report consists of a proposal for a new structure of the website (a sitemap), arguments for the choices made and an overview of all given category names. These category names can be very informative; it shows what the users think is really important and provides more information about the categories according to the users.
